Chamnesia Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 19, 2026

Chamnesia ("Chamnesia," "we," "us," or "our") is a private, invitation-only messaging service designed to minimize the information stored on our servers. We believe your conversations should belong to you.

This Privacy Policy explains what information Chamnesia processes, how the service works, and the choices available to you when using the application.

1. Our Approach to Privacy

Unlike messaging services that maintain a permanent copy of your conversations on their servers, Chamnesia uses a device-first approach. Messages are encrypted before transmission and temporarily relayed through our servers for delivery. Once a delivery instruction has been successfully processed, it is removed from the delivery queue.

Your conversation history, including messages and attachments, is stored locally on your device. Chamnesia does not maintain a server-side archive of your delivered conversations.

2. Information We Collect

Chamnesia processes certain information necessary to provide and operate the service. This may include:

  • Profile information: Information you choose to provide when creating or configuring your profile, such as your display name and profile image.
  • Account and device information: Internal account identifiers, device identifiers, and other information required to associate your profile with an authorized device.
  • Encryption information: Public encryption keys needed to establish secure communication. Your private encryption key is stored locally on your device.
  • Invitation and connection information: Information required to create invitation codes, establish connections, and manage contacts or groups.
  • Technical information: Limited operational information, such as IP addresses, server requests, and diagnostic or security-related records, which may be processed to maintain and protect the service.
  • Recovery information: If you use the encrypted backup and restore feature, Chamnesia may store a secure hash of your recovery password for verification. Your recovery password itself is not stored in the backup file or retained by the server in plaintext.

3. Messages and End-to-End Encryption

Chamnesia uses end-to-end encryption to protect message contents during transmission. Messages are encrypted on the sending device and decrypted on the receiving device using encryption keys established between participants.

Our servers relay encrypted delivery instructions but are not intended to access the plaintext contents of your conversations. Delivery instructions are removed from the server after they have been successfully processed.

Messages that have not yet been delivered may remain temporarily queued until delivery or until they are otherwise removed under the service's operational procedures.

4. Information Stored on Your Device

Your messages, conversation history, attachments, contacts, and private encryption information are stored locally using your device's application storage.

Because Chamnesia does not maintain a permanent server-side copy of your conversation history, losing access to your device, uninstalling the application, or clearing its storage may result in the permanent loss of that information unless you have created a usable backup.

5. Encrypted Backups and Profile Restoration

Chamnesia provides an optional encrypted backup feature that allows you to export your locally stored profile and conversation data. Backup files are encrypted using a recovery password that you generate during the backup process.

You are responsible for safeguarding both your backup file and recovery password. Chamnesia cannot recover the contents of an encrypted backup without the correct recovery password.

Backup files are saved or exported to a location selected or managed through your device's download functionality. If you transfer a backup to a cloud storage provider, email service, or another third party, that provider's privacy practices will also apply.

6. Invitations and Contacts

Chamnesia is an invitation-only messaging platform. Users establish connections through invitation codes rather than a publicly searchable directory.

The service processes the information necessary to generate, validate, and manage invitations and connections. Information you choose to share with another user, including your display name and profile image, may be visible to that user.

7. How We Use Information

We use the information processed by Chamnesia to:

  • Operate and maintain the messaging service.
  • Authenticate profiles and authorized devices.
  • Establish encrypted connections between users.
  • Relay messages and other delivery instructions.
  • Manage invitations, contacts, and groups.
  • Support profile recovery and restoration.
  • Identify technical problems, abuse, and security threats.
  • Respond to support requests and comply with applicable legal obligations.

8. Sharing of Information

Chamnesia does not sell your personal information.

Information may be processed by infrastructure or technical service providers acting on our behalf where necessary to operate the application. We may also disclose information when required by applicable law, a valid legal process, or where necessary to protect the security and integrity of the service.

Because Chamnesia does not maintain a permanent archive of delivered message contents, we generally cannot retrieve conversation history stored exclusively on a user's device. This does not prevent another participant from retaining, copying, capturing, or sharing messages they have received.

9. Data Retention

Encrypted delivery instructions are retained temporarily for processing and removed after successful delivery. Account information and other operational records may be retained for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the service, maintain security, resolve technical issues, or satisfy applicable legal obligations.

Your locally stored conversation history remains on your device until you delete it, remove your local profile, or otherwise clear the application's storage.

10. Removing Your Profile and Deleting Your Account

Chamnesia allows you to remove a profile from your device. Profile removal is available in the Profile Settings section within the app. Removing a local profile deletes its locally stored data from that device but does not necessarily delete the associated account information maintained by the service.

If you wish to delete your account and associated server-side information, you may do so in the Profile Settings section within the app. Certain information may need to be retained where required by law or for legitimate security and operational purposes. Deleting your account will trigger deletion of messages and your profile in your contacts' device as well, however we cannot guarantee that they have not retained your information outside of the app.

11. Security

Chamnesia incorporates encryption, device-based storage, and other technical measures intended to protect your information and minimize unnecessary data retention.

No application, device, or method of electronic transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure. We encourage users to protect their devices, safeguard recovery passwords, and exercise care when sharing sensitive information.

12. Children's Privacy

Chamnesia is not intended for children under the age of 13, or any higher minimum age applicable in their jurisdiction. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children below the applicable minimum age. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.

13. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes to Chamnesia, our practices, or applicable legal requirements. When changes are made, we will update the date displayed at the top of this page. Material changes may also be communicated through the application or other appropriate channels.
